Leather Boxing Gloves (circa 1930)

These boxing gloves from the 1930s show the type of gloves that would have worn by Larry Gains and his contemporaries. This particular pair is believed to have belonged to George Godfrey, an African American boxer, who Larry Gains fought twice for the World Coloured Heavyweight title. The name ‘Godfrey’ is printed on the inside of the left glove. During their first fight in 1926, Godfrey defeated Larry at Broadway Auditorium, New York. However, the tables turned in 1928 at Maple Leaf Stadium, Toronto when Larry won the World Coloured Heavyweight title from Godfrey.
